Somali Women Affairs Minister Khadija Mohamed Diriye passed away this afternoon in Djibouti, where she had arrived on Tuesday to participate in the Heritage Institute 7th Forum for Ideas as a keynote speaker. Condolences are pouring in for the MP and one of Somalia's longest-serving ministers, who served in three successive governments since 2014.
Khadija, a devoted public servant for two decades, fell critically ill upon her arrival in Djibouti, prompting an urgent hospitalization. Her sudden demise sent shockwaves, abruptly halting the conference sessions on its second day. The Heritage Institute expressed regret, canceling all concurrent sessions and the scheduled dinner at Kempinski, initially meant to commemorate the institute's 11th anniversary.
